What
you may expect when you join us for Sunday Service
Our
services begin at 10:00 AM and last for about an hour. Our minister leads the
service approximately three services a month with the fourth (and sometimes
fifth service) being lay-led or led by a guest minister. These services can be
on a variety of topics.
The
following components may be included in a typical service:
|
Prelude: |
Music
that acts as a backdrop for preparing ourselves for worship. |
|
Welcome
and Announcements: |
This
is a time in our service when we formally welcome "new and almost
new" visitors and invite them to join us for coffee and conversation
following the service in our fellowship hall. We then invite members
and friends to make announcements about events in the life of the church. |
|
Opening
Words: |
Chosen
by the minister to introduce the theme of the service. |
|
Chalice
Lighting: |
We
open every service with the lighting of our custom made chalice. It is the
symbol that ties us to Unitarian Universalism. |
|
Hymn: |
We
join together in song two or three times during the service. Hymns are taken
from our hymnal - Singing the Living Tradition |
|
Children’s
Story: |
About
twice a month our children join us for the first part of the service and hear
a story or other sharing. Unless the service is designed to be
intergenerational, the children leave for their Church School classes
following the story. |
|
Joys
and Concerns: |
This
is an opportunity to share with our church community personal joys and
concerns. |
|
Meditation/Prayer: |
A
time of quiet reflection led by the minister both spoken and silent. |
|
Offering: |
We
receive free will offerings in support of the work of the church. |
|
Reading: |
Taken
from any number of sources, readings provide background or tone to the
service. |
|
Sermon: |
The
address delivered by our minister or a guest. We practice freedom of the
pulpit and invite many points of view in sermons. |
|
Closing
Circle: |
We
rise and form a circle around the sanctuary and sing a closing hymn and
listen to closing words or a benediction. |
|
Postlude: |
A
closing piece of music. |
If
you are unfamiliar with Unitarian Universalism and our worship, we hope this
helps to prepare you for a visit with us some Sunday morning. You are welcome regardless of your previous
worship experience.
